Brea's Emergency Preparedness Program

The City of Brea has an active Emergency Preparedness Program coordinated by a professional emergency manager. Public programs available range from those provided upon the request of an organization or group to the more structured Brea CERT classes offered periodically.

Five Key Elements

The five key elements of the City's Emergency Preparedness Program are:

• Development and maintenance of the City's Emergency Response Plan
• Development and maintenance of the City's Emergency Operations Center (EOC)
• Coordination of preparedness, training and exercises for city staff to be sure they are ready to respond to any emergency
• Public education and outreach to the residents and businesses of Brea
• Fund recovery following disasters

Brea prides itself at being a leader in emergency management, not only at the local level, but at the regional and state level as well. We are active in many committees and forums designed to promote preparedness and coordination between levels of government.

 Official Notification Channels

Besides media outlets, for communications related to emergencies impacting the City of Brea, there are several reliable official channels. This website is the primary source of ongoing information. During a prolonged emergency incident, it would be regularly updated with the latest confirmed information or safety instructions. There is also a phone hotline at 714-990-7732, which would be used for periodic short recordings, particularly related to road closures. In addition, messages would be transmitted as possible over the City's various social media.

Within Orange County it is highly advisable to register with the AlertOC mass notification system. You can be contacted via phone, email or text should an emergency threaten your Brea home or business. Landline phones are automatically loaded into this countywide system. You must log-in to add or update any additional contact points. Everyone in your family could be registered to a particular Orange County address and receive notice whenever an important emergency message affecting that location is sent through AlertOC.

Another more recent national notification system to become aware of is the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) which are public safety messages delivered via cell phones. Alerts are geographically targeted through a region via cell towers. To better serve an increasingly mobile populace, these important alerts are directly sent from authorized public safety agencies only for three distinct purposes: an Amber Alert meeting the Department of Justice criteria to help law enforcement locate an abducted child; an imminent threat alert related to a potential severe disaster; and a presidential alert.

The Emergency Preparedness Coordinator is available to speak to your group of 10 or more people on emergency preparedness. Most presentations are offered free of charge and participants will be provided with literature and handouts for future reference. Programs can be tailored to meet the needs of your group based on age, experience and interest. Weekend and evening appointments are available on a limited basis.
