[ARCHIVED] Placement of Political Signs Throughout the City

During election season many questions arise as to where candidates are able to place their campaign signs and banners. With the intent to preserve and improve the general appearance of the City of Brea as a desirable and attractive environment in which to live, work and play, political (or any) temporary signs on public rights-of-way in the City are limited. Political signs on private property are not regulated by the City, but are subject to the property owner’s approval.

Political Signs in the Public Right-of-Way

All temporary sign and banner placement within public rights-of-way (City streets) is limited to placement upon City-owned light poles and is subject to specific location, design, and installation standards. One 45-day permit is available per year, per applicant. Specific standards for these signs can be found within section 12.04.030.B of the City Code. They are only allowed on certain streets and there can only be one (1) temporary sign per light pole and a maximum of three (3) temporary signs per block, total, at any one time from any combination of applicants. The signs are on a “first come, first served” basis. If more than one applicant desires sign placement at a location, the complete applications (i.e., all materials meeting all requirements) are processed in the order received by the City.

Political Signs on Private Property

Political sign placement on a homeowner’s property, a private commercial property, and any other private property is subject to approval from the property owner.  No City permit is required for these signs.  However, if sign size or design parameters reach levels requiring structural review to assure for safety, then a building permit from the City is required.
