Orange County Waste & Recycling is hosting a virtual information meeting on the extension of the Olinda Alpha Landfill Closure Date. All community members are invited to participate and provide comments. This is the only opportunity for residents to speak-out and voice their concerns to the County about extending the closure date of the Olinda Alpha Landfill.
The Olinda Alpha Landfill, located in the east side of Brea, is operated by the County of Orange. The City of Brea is a “Host City” under a memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that benefits the City and limits the amount of trash that can be hauled on a daily basis. Landfill capacity is evaluated on an annual basis. Its maximum capacity will top out at 1,415 ft elevation and it is currently measured at 1,325 ft in elevation. The landfill's capacity is taking longer to fill due to less waste being received than anticipated, settlement, better compaction, and more recycling. Under the current MOU, the landfill is scheduled to close on December 31, 2021. The County is looking to extend the landfill's closure date to 2036.
